How do/can they do it???

2+2=4 how you determine this is by lining up the numbers in a row, make ticks beside them and count them up. Easy isn't it?

Stop what you are doing and head for the nearest door, the building is on fire!

What was that like? Can you imagine being in the US from Mexico, Russia, Korea, or Germany for two years and needing to take an exam in English in order to graduate from a high school? I don't know about you but I would have one heck of a time. We as educators need to educate our legislators on how difficult this is. The passing rate for the ELL students at my high school is causing great kids to consider dropping out of school. We need to do something.

  1. We need to ask what is being tested, a student's skills in a particular subject or students' knowledge about the English language? I don't know how we can remedy this issue without creating tests in every possible language that students come to our schools speaking. That would be a nightmare of a task to accomplish but we are in the job of doing what is best for kids. The English language will come with time for students from foreign countries but it is essential that they acquire the necessary skills for further academic study and life.

  2. I do believe students should learn English if they move here, but we are asking them to do it in unreasonable time. In my science class I get students who are supposed to learn what photosynthesis is, but can't even say a simple sentence in English. I don't have the answer, but something more should be done for these students.

  3. I echo Daniel's sentiments. If students whose primary language is not English are going to live here, they should learn the language. However, we need to be more support in the manner in which we help them master the language acquisition skills needed for them to be successfully assimilated into our high-stakes testocracy. I do think the larger problem lies in our level of ethnocentrism in this country. That perhaps is an entirely new discussion as it reflects the canon and what is considered important for our students to learn across disciplines and grade levels. :)

  4. Sorry Sherry - just wanted to correct the typo in my first comment.

  5. What if we were required to learn the native language of all of the people we come in contact with? Sound crazy? I wonder if it's so crazy to the Russian immigrant that is trying to get by in the US today.... I agree that we all need a common language in this country, but we need to be sensitive to the Native tongues of who makes up this country. Why do we find it so necessary to "Americanize" everyone....
